It varies from other Digimon DS games in that the player does not give commands in a fight but the Digimon choose their attacks themselves. It also requires that the player feeds and looks after their Digimon, also having to heal, cure, and clean up after them, much like the older Digimon games. This is also the first Digimon game to include the Dracomon line of Digimon, featuring Petitmon, Babydmon, Dracomon, Coredramon (Air), Coredramon (Ground), Wingdramon, Groundramon, Slayerdramon, and Breakdramon. The starting Digimon is Botamon.

Colony Wars is a combat fighter game set in space. You, as the player, join as a recruit in the League's fleet. Missions take place in various fighters, from a 1st person view inside the cockpit, or a 3rd person view from behind your ship. Ships have separate meters for shields and armor, and the player must cycle between weapons designed specifically to damage each. At the most basic, purple lasers must drain a target's shields, followed by switching to red lasers to destroy them.
The game features advanced lighting and particle effects for the Playstation, as well as a basic simulation of Newtonian physics. Thrusters are only active for as long as the accelerate button is held down. The player can burst fire their thrusters and drift, allowing for some advanced maneuvers. Warhawk, released as AirAssault in Japan, is a futuristic arcade-style flight-combat game where the player flies a VTOL aircraft. The player maneuvers with 360 degrees of flight control through six levels. Weapons include fire-off lock-ons, rockets, multi-fire swarmers, and plasma cannons. The game has no multiplayer capabilities and does not feature DualShock or analog controller support.
There are no saving or loading features. Instead, a password is presented each time a level is completed. The game ends after its six levels are completed, or when the player's craft can no longer fly. This occurs if the craft takes heavy damage or the player ejects from their craft. The craft is teleported to base, repaired, and sent back to the stage for the first two times this happens; on the third time, the game ends.
