Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed - Special Edition is a 1996 retail re-release of The Need for Speed for PC which includes several improvements over the original 1995 PC release.
It introduced support for Microsoft Windows 95, whilst capable of running on Microsoft DOS, and several improvements to its rendering engine as well as two additional tracks.
The complete soundtrack playing during races was also made available on the Special Edition. This feature was previously only in the PlayStation and Sega Saturn releases.
Shutokou Battle Gaiden: Super Technic Challenge is a Racing game, developed by Mitsui & Co. and published by MediaQuest, which was released in Japan in 1996. It features 25 licensed vehicles. The gameplay consists of drifting your vehicle with arcade-like handling in drift zones and recieving scores based on the angle, length and speed of the players's drift. Events are set up as a 1 v 1 battle between the player and a CPU, with the winner being whoever has the highest drift score at the end of the lap.
The LCD version of Indy 500 is a watered-down version of the arcade game Indy 500 created by Tiger Electronics. It was released as part of the Pocket Arcade series in 1996. The following year it was re-released as Sega Raceway, presumably as the Indy 500 license had expired.
Speed Racer is an arcade type game that resembles the Sega Saturn's Daytona USA. The first track is identical, except for the lack of a pit lane, the Sonic sculpture in a wall and the different sponsor banners. The major difference between the two games is the performance of the car and the fact that the player can use all the gadgets of the anime Mach 5. The gadgets can be used to "shunt" other cars (even with the Cutter, the cars only bounce and there is no damage in the game), take shortcuts (by cutting trees and passing under lakes), etc. The controls are simple and the player switches over the gadgets and the camera views. The player can choose the length of the race in the menu, along basic sound options.
This is one of the games that came with Amiga Forever, which I highly recommend. I'd define it as slow, sluggish and unresponsive, which is a shame, as the game is an obvious homage to Racing Destruction Set. There is a large number of user-created tracks included, and you can make your own. You can even adjust the gravity (on top of the default "earth" mode, the gravity on tracks can be that of any of the other planets, the moon or the sun). If they had gotten the controls right, this could have been something to write home about.
Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition drives home the excitement of speedway racing more than ever before! Slick new full-screen graphics and two brand new extra circuits await as you select any one of eight turbo-charged cars to race in. Split-screen 2-player mode and a host of options including ghost car ensure that Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition will set the pace in the race to the finish line.
San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing is the first game in the Rush series.
Tne N64 version contains six regular tracks and two hidden tracks. The regular tracks can be run in either reverse or mirrored modes and feature added collectible hidden keys throughout the track that can be used to unlock hidden vehicles. It also contains a Practice Mode and a Death Race mode where the game ends if the player crashes. The N64 port of Rush also includes a Circuit Mode and a save system for Fast Times, circuit progress, and hidden keys that the player can find on secret spots to unlock new cars.
Mini-Yonku Shining Scorpion: Let's & Go!! is a Racing game, developed by Kid and published by ASCII Entertainment, which was released in Japan in 1996.
Mario Kart 64 is the second main installment of the Mario Kart series. It is the first game in the series to use three-dimensional graphics, however, the characters and items in this game are still two-dimensional, pre-rendered sprites. The game offers two camera angles and three engine sizes: 50cc, 100cc and 150cc. Each kart has distinctive handling, acceleration and top speed capabilities. Shells that you fire at rival racers, Bananas that make them skid out and Lightning Bolts that make them small and very slow are just a few of the game's unique power-ups.
Dare Devil Derby 3D places you in a variety of races and includes 30 tracks through 10 different environments. There are a total of eight characters to play as, each with their own various traits.
Single player modes of play are: grand prix, world series, championship, knockout, one-on-one, and speed trial. Each race has variations such as number of tracks, time limits, point systems, and number of computer opponents.
Multi-player modes include: battle race, circuit race, battle comp, pro battle comp, circuit comp, and speed comp. Similar variations exist for multi-player modes as they do in the single player modes. One difference is that the view will zoom in and out in order to keep every player on the screen.
Scorcher is a futuristic racing video game for the PC and the Sega Saturn. The game focuses on special motorcycles that reach up to 450 km/h racing through dangerous tracks in a dystopian year 2021.
Destruction Derby 2 is the sequel to the MS-DOS, PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64 title Destruction Derby. Here the player must race on up to seven different circuits, in a range of modes, similar to its predecessor. The modes are Wrecking Racing (where the player must destroy or spin the other competitors), Stock Car (a typical race where it's 1st to the flag) and Destruction Derby, which is based around the crash arenas. Commentator Paul Page performed as the announcer. This Racing game is widely known for its destruction and chaotic themes that follow by loud, gritty and dark metal songs.
WipEout XL is set in the year 2097, around four decades after its predecessor. Instead of the F3600 anti-gravity racing competition, the game features an even faster and more dangerous tournament: the F5000 AG league. The gameplay system is similar to that of the previous game: players race against each other or computer in high-speed futuristic environments, liberally picking up weapons scattered around the stages and using them against the opponents to finish the race in the highest position.
