The player starts out with a relatively weak cannon but can upgrade to ring, laser, and missile weapons, which are much more powerful. The player can also choose from three difficulty settings: Eagle, Albatross, and Ace; but the fourth difficulty setting, Ultimate, must be unlocked. One proceeds by controlling the character in 8 directions and can shoot in a different direction from the direction he is looking.
Players must choose between a dune buggy, a sand rail vehicle, and the incredible off-road truck. All races are strictly against the clock while the driver navigates through blockades on the road and other drivers that want to defeat the player. All of the ten courses must be unlocked in a linear fashion; all the races take place in a tube. Few power-ups exist in them game; including a chance to increase the player's nitro boost.
There are ten stages in the entire game. No penalties are given for bumping into the other drivers; unlike real life. Each course is in the shape of a half-pipe.

Dirk must collect all "lifestones" scattered all around the game world (by walking or jumping) to finally save Princess Daphne. The game world is divided in several screens which can be freely navigated and are a little wider than Game Boy's screen. Heiankyo Alien takes place during the Heian Age when the city of Kyo is invaded by aliens. The aliens have been eating the people and devouring the city. As a Kebiishi, or knight, you decide to defend the city by burying the aliens alive. Your task is to run around areas set up like mazes and dig holes. The longer you hold down the button the larger the hole will be. Holes need to be placed strategically so as to trap the moving aliens and not to corner yourself. When an alien falls into a hole you must then refill the hole before they can escape. Defeat all 12 rounds to win the game. Play alone, against a friend, or team up with a friend to bury aliens alive in Heiankyo Alien.
