The game begins in 1866 Arizona when the game's hero, a cowboy named Fenimore Fillmore, tries to rescue an old peddler from a band of attacking rustlers. The dying peddler gives Fenimore a golden skull and tells him the legend of a fabulous treasure that can be found by collecting two other golden skulls. To reach his goal, Fenimore Fillmore must battle the evil Friar Anselmo and the perfidious Colonel Leconte (who also seek the treasure), fight fierce Apaches (whose Chief's son's tepee boasts a sheepskin from Harvard), engage sleepy Mexican revolutionaries (whose leader is amnesic), outwit witty French soldiers (federated with Emperor Maximilian of México), and suffer the insufferable alcohol-prohibition-ladies league. Solving the puzzles involves fabricating bootleg whiskey, blowing up a bank's safe, escaping from prison, rescuing a pianist from a well, locating and flying a balloon, and turning a devout monk into a gallant rebel general. The game elements emulate Spaghetti Westerns and caricature American Wild
One rather typical Halloween eve, Benjamin is witnessing his uncle's attempt to activate the Worm Hole Spawner, his latest invention. The experiment works, and a hole in the sky rips open. Meanwhile in a galaxy far, far away, an entity, chased by a spaceship, accidentally dive into the worm hole which suddenly appears before them. The spaceship hits the brakes and starts to orbit around earth. The alien shuttle lands next to the mansion and four white little aliens emerge from inside. They enter the mansion and grab Benjamin's uncle, while Ben himself is hiding behind the Worm Hole Spawner. Unnoticed, Benjamin is left behind with a task to solve the alien mystery and rescue his uncle... and possibly the galaxy as well.
Cavewars is a turn based strategy game that combines elements of several different games of its era. The turn based strategy element mirrors that of Heroes of Might and Magic while the ability to research new units and improve armies is similar to that of Master of Orion.
The unique element that separates this game from others is that the battles can take place on a number of different levels of a cave. All may be well on level 1, with both sides having a city there; meanwhile, battles rage every turn on level 3. Randomly generated maps and 8 different races to choose from ensures the same game is never played twice.
In the 25 levels the player duels one enemy each. Additionally there are other ships which shoot both opponents and asteroids which either split when shot or give extras like better armor. There are three arenas: horizontal, vertical and spherical. Every fight costs credits so the player has to pick up money symbols during the fight. When having more money he can spend it on weapon and armor upgrades. The soundtrack features 17 songs from bands like Dog eat Dog, Pop will eat itself and Sugar Ray and can be replaced with another music CD.
