It is similar to the Palm OS game released two years earlier but has some differences in available game modes and features. It is played from a simple top down perspective with 2D graphics but there are several different chess sets to choose from. Games can be played either human vs. human or human vs. computer with eleven different computer skill levels to choose from. During games it is possible to ask for a quick advice and the game then suggests the next move. It is also possible to show opening hints as well as info on legal squares and threatened pieces. There are also options to take back moves and to switch sides during a game. In addition to the main game mode there is also a quiz mode and classic games. This installment still features the same storyline based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with the various officers as playable characters. The character list and appearance is the same as in Dynasty Warriors 6, meaning some of the previous game's characters are not available. The difference in this one is that the player is allowed to choose only one character for the chosen force (either Wei, Wu or Shu) who starts in a village that will act as the hub, or camp, from which the game battles are accessed. Released on February 25, 2009 in Japan, Initial D Arcade Stage 5 was the second game in the series released on the Sega Lindbergh hardware. A few notable differences include massive physics changes. Compared to Arcade Stage 4/Extreme Stage, which used "drifting" physics, Arcade Stage 5 featured more realistic driving physics, which included tire and brake wear down. Although the tire and brake wear are not displayed anywhere in the game, experienced players can notice the difference in the change in physics as they progress in races.
