The Killing Blade

The Killing Blade

A 2D fighting game made in 1998 by Taiwanese developer IGS for their PolyGame Master series of arcade machines. Features a historical-fantasy aesthetic similar to Samurai Shodown while experimenting with tag-team mechanics.

Overview

The Killing Blade (known in China as Ào Jiàn Kuáng Dāo) is a 2D historical-fantasy weapon-based fighting game developed and released by IGS for arcades (using their PolyGame Master hardware) in Asian regions in 1998.

The studio's second fighting game (after Alien Challenge), Killing Blade plays similarly (and has a similar historical-fantasy aesthetic) to SNK's Samurai Shodown series. It features a 2-on-2 tag-team mechanic (similar to the Marvel vs. Capcom series) and two separate power meters (a red "offensive" meter for super moves and a blue "defensive" meter for a special universal combo).

The game later received an updated revision in 2005 exclusively in China as Ào Jiàn Kuáng Dāo: Jiāqiáng Bǎn. This version alters the game's tag-team mechanics to play similar to Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (with two main characters, each with their own lifebar, and one assist character). It also makes both boss characters playable.

Characters

The original version of the game included 12 playable characters and 2 unplayable bosses. Both bosses were later made playable in the game's updated revision.
