The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures

The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures

An Ace Attorney spin-off directed by series' creator Shu Takumi about Phoenix Wright's ancestor from the Meiji Era.

Overview

The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures (Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken) is a spin-off in the Ace Attorney franchise that takes place during the Meiji period (1868 - 1912) and follows Phoenix Wright's ancestor's adventures in Japan as well as London. The game was developed by Capcom for the Nintendo 3DS and was written and directed by the creator of the series, Shu Takumi. The Great Ace Attorney was released in Japan on July 9, 2015 and was followed by a direct sequel in 2017 called The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve. A port for mobile devices was also released in Japan on August 31, 2017.

English Release

For many years The Great Ace Attorney and its sequel were some of the few titles in the franchise to not see a release in the West, the only other game being Gyakuten Kenji 2. The exact reason for why these games were not translated at the time has never been revealed but Capcom's French twitter account did state in September 2015 that The Great Ace Attorney was not expected to be localized in response to a question about the title from fans. Series producer, Motohide Eshiro, also stated in a 2016 interview with GameSpot that the game could not be localized, saying that:

"Unfortunately there's a number of circumstances... We absolutely do want to bring it to the West, but unfortunately due to these circumstances right now... I'm really really sorry!"

This eventually lead to a group of fans, calling themselves the Scarlet Study, beginning a fan translation project in 2016 to localize The Great Ace Attorney into English unofficially. After releasing several patches over the years that translated individual episodes, the final patch was eventually released on March 30, 2019. However, 6 years after its Japanese release on the 3DS, Capcom finally officially localized both Great Ace Attorney titles together as a collection called The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, which was published worldwide on July 27, 2021.
