Arkham Origins Blackgate translates many of the series' signature mechanics, including the free-flow combat system, the predator stealth system and detective vision, to a 2-dimensional plane.

Like original Arkham Asylum, Blackgate features the type of non-linear exploration typically associated with the Metroidvania sub-genre.

Three months after the events of Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman is forced to return to Blackgate Penitentiary after the Joker, the Penguin and Black Mask each gain control of a prision wing following a large explosion.

With help from Catwoman, Batman must infiltrate each wing, free hostages taken by the inmates, and defeat the villains responsible. The player can choose to tackle the bosses in any order, resulting in a unique ending for each boss tackled last.
