Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril

Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril

An original NES game, released on cartridge (unlicensed by Nintendo) in January 2010, by Sivak Games via RetroZone and in 2022 on Xbox via 8-Bit Legit. Gameplay-wise Battle Kid is much like I Wanna Be the Guy and Mega Man. Tough-as-nails platformer with a death count.

Overview

Battle Kid is largely inspired by the freeware game, I Wanna Be the Guy, and shares similar gameplay mechanics and structure. The protagonist, Timmy, dies after one hit, just like the Kid from IWBTG. His only method of attack is shooting projectiles straight forward. The structure follows a typical metroidvania style format, with multiple paths to take within a large area rather than completely separate levels. There are also several upgrades to be obtained throughout the game.

Sivak released a demo for BK:FoP shortly before the game's release. The demo took the form of a rom containing the opening area of the game to be played on an emulator. The box cover art was designed by British video game television presenter, "Guru Larry" Bundy Jr. A sequel, Battle Kid 2, came out in 2012.
