Gran Turismo 4 is the fourth main installment in the Gran Turismo series. This version boasts 721 cars from 80 manufacturers and 51 tracks, including a mixture of real world locations and original tracks from the developers. Gran Turismo 4 is still considered "the real driving simulator" due to its extremely realistic physics engine, with each car and road surface having a different feel. The game, despite being on the PlayStation 2 is highly regarded as being photo-realistic and boasts 480i/p and 1080i video options along with wide screen mode. The cars are incredibly highly detailed, with an average of 3,500 polygons being used for each one (note: Gran Turismo 5: Prologue uses around 200,000 polygons for each car, including interior).
As is traditional with the Gran Turismo series, there are two main game modes: Arcade, and Gran Turismo World. Arcade mode gives players a chance to take part in a single race, time trial, free run or split-screen race without it effecting their game status. In Gran Turismo World, the player must advance their career by taking part in various different races and winning or buying new cars. The license tests also return, forcing players to prove that they should be on a race track before being allowed to take part in high level races. A new way to play GT World was added, dubbed 'B-Spec'; this gave people the opportunity to sit out long races and let an AI driver to the heavy lifting – this was particularly useful for the three twenty four hour races featured in the game, but these could also be completed in A-Spec (first person) mode. B-Spec was initially going to be featured in Gran Turismo 3, however, due to a tight release schedule, it was removed – hence the name 'Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec'.
Polyphony Digital originally stated that the game would feature online mode, with six players being able to compete with each other from around the world. However, this removed from the final version, being replaced with a local-network play mode.
It was announced shortly after the game's release that there was to be a direct port of the game to Sony's handheld system, the PSP. After almost no news on the project for a few years, many presumed it to have been quietly canceled, but the game re-surfaced at E3 2009 under the title ' Gran Turismo PSP'. It is, however, no longer a direct port, and a unique experience from the console versions of the game.
